Omaha Hi/Lo Tips

Omaha Poker has grown in popularity over the past decade and one of the variations of Omaha Poker is Omaha Hi/Lo. If you don’t know how to play Omaha Hi/Lo yet, then I would suggest reading the rules before continuing to read through this article. If you know how to play Omaha Poker then the only difference in Omaha Hi/Lo is the there is both a high hand and low hand which split the pot unless the low hand doesn’t qualify. We’re going to go through some tips now which you can implement into your game so that you can hold your own at the tables.

* First start by getting the latest Poker Stars Download. Typically you want to play hands when you have two high suited connectors and two low cards so that you can win both the high and low hand possibly. Of course you’re not always going to have low cards for the low hand when you play, but when you do have hands with low cards and high cards make sure you bet them big.

* I don’t recommend raising the pot in Omaha Hi/Lo preflop on PokerStars because any cards could come on the flop and even if you have pocket aces in your hand they can easily be beaten after the flop. You should wait until after the flop until you start betting big and typically only once you have made your hand.

* If you’re in the pot solely to win the low pot because you have a good low hand make sure that you don’t end up going all-in. The reason being is that if the person who wins the high pot has a great hand they might also have the same hand as you for the low pot. This happens all to often and it means that you would only win 50% of the low hand which is only 25% of the pot so if it’s only you and one player putting money into the pot you’ll end up losing money at the end of the hand.

* Don’t get sucked into paying small raises every hand preflop on PokerStars.com, because you have lots of options. You’ll have lots of options every single hand when you play Omaha Poker so you need to be selective and only choose the best starting hands. Ideally you don’t want to play hands with low to medium pocket pairs because it will limit your options of hitting anything. On the same note you should fold every hand you have with trips because you can only use two cards out of your four which would mean your trips wouldn’t even count.

* Omaha Poker is generally on the whole a loose poker game with very loose opponents so you want to limit how often you bluff and who you bluff against. Most players tend to call down to the river so make sure you wait to bluff until the river and make sure before you do that there aren’t flushes or straights out there. Bluffing isn’t ideal in Omaha and you should focus on winning hands and not trying to steal them when you play this game.
